Any woman contemplating a career as a physician or already working in the profession will gain a good deal of insight from this collection of personal essays and poems by female physicians over the last century and a half. Organized into categories such as "Internship and Residency," "Mothering and Doctoring," and "Barriers," the anthology presents feminine and feminist perspectives on all aspects of a medical career. Most of the pieces are contemporary and previously unpublished, solicited by Chin, an internist and former Columbia University medical professor. In her essay "We're Not in Kansas Anymore: Men as Medical Mentors," pediatrician and author (Her Own Medicine) Sayantani DasGupta describes how her search for a "female" professional mentor turned up a vital male role model instead. Psychiatrist Bhuvana Chandra's evocative poem recalls how much it meant to her father that she became a doctor. Several pieces deal with reconciling the commitment to patients with the commitment to family life, such as Molly Carnes's down-to-earth "Balancing Family and Career: Advice from the Trenches." "The book is an anthology of heartfelt and honest essays, stories, and poems written by more than 150 women (and a few men), edited by an academic general internist and mother on temporary leave from her medical career. The first chapter recounts the history of women in medicine, beginning with Harriet Hunt and Elizabeth Blackwell. The next chapter anthologizes essays and poems of ‘early pioneers,’ women who received their medical degrees between the 1850s and 1950s. "One of the many lessons learned from the second wave of feminism in the United States is that women cannot be spoken of as a discreet sociological category. Not all women possess the same qualities by virtue of their biology, which is one among many factorsrace, social class, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, and othersthat collectively form a person’s identity. Applying this belief to medicine, we came to recognize that no uniform category for ‘female physician’ existsthat a white, female family doctor in rural Iowa may have some common characteristics with a Latina general surgeon in New York City but that many other aspects of their circumstances diverge, regardless of their shared biology. Thus, any collection of readings on women in medicine faces the difficult task of how to chronicle the wide experiences of women as women in the profession without claiming that an all-inclusive, generalizable category exists. Yet This Side of Doctoring: Reflections From Women in Medicine, Eliza Lo Chin’s collection of 140 stories, essays, and poems, succeeds in compiling what Janet Bickel, who writes the foreword, calls a ‘welcome network of like experiences.’
The book is divided into 12 sections: ‘Historical Perspectives,’ ‘Early Pioneers,’ ‘The Formative Years,’ ‘Life in the Trenches: Internship and Residency,’ ‘On Doctoring,’ ‘Mothering and Doctoring,’ ‘Making Choices’ ‘Barriers,’ ‘Connections,’ ‘Balancing’, ‘Our Families’ Perspectives,’ and ‘Reflections.’ Each section, other than the first, which is written solely by Chin, contains multiple entries that include poetry, anecdotes involving memorable patients, short and pithy observations, and longer reflective essays and stories, often focusing on personal and professional issues. Some are excerpts of previously published longer works by such well-known authors as Rachel Naomi Remen and Perri Klass; most are original pieces.
The book provides several insights for readers seeking new understandings of the lived experiences of women in US medicine. First, many of the entries are surprisingly gender neutral. In fact, if the reader did not know the volume was written entirely by women, she would not have a clue as to whether some of the authors were male or female. These accounts of doctoring and family concerns are universal enough to transcend gender in relationships with patients and colleagues, balancing work and family, and finding meaning in one’s profession. One of the best-crafted entries, Audrey Shafer’s poem ‘Monday Morning,’ has to do with the fluid boundaries between home and hospital. In the ‘prelight’ as she leaves for the hospital, she encounters her three-year-old son just in time for a kiss and hug. Later, as she enjoys the ‘rote motions’ getting ready in the operating suite,

Of course, some entries arise directly from the experience of being a woman who is also a doctor: breastfeeding while working long hours or sexist remarks from residency interviewers: ‘I hope you don’t plan on getting pregnant’ or the more subtle ‘So you probably want to have at least a few children?’ However, many of the entries in the ‘Barriers’ section sound dated: an anecdote from the anatomy lab in the 1960s, accounts by someone in the profession 22 years, another by a physician who had graduated in 1958. Such accounts are historically valuable but offer little new understanding of the more subtle, nuanced barriers confronting women in medicine today.
Bickel closes her foreword with ‘I also read [the book] as Acts 1 and 2 of a drama with tragic, comic, and poetic elements. Act 3 is about to begin.’ She has captured what the book portrays: snapshots of young, midcareer, and older women in medicine. These snapshots convey the dailiness of being a doctor, a colleague, an academic, sometimes a mother or wife, or deciding whether to be a mother, a dailiness unique to each author, which cannot be generalized. But, as Bickel points out, women in medicine are just the beginning of Act 3, becoming actively involved in the plot, creating personal identities, not merely receiving them from past generations. Kathryn Ko, a neurosurgeon, describes this inherited medical environment, a ‘landscape of a profession whose pulse, until recently, was transfixed by men with women in supporting roles at home, in the office and in the hospital.’ What will women do with this landscape? Ko does not offer specifics, but she does project that women in medicine are ‘unlikely to travel the road that many of the men took because the steps they left for us are too narrow.’ Or as Daphne Miller writes, ‘The person (and doctor) that I am expected to be and that I want to be is very different from those older men who taught me. Of course, this is inevitable because I am a young woman and a mom – a far cry from Marcus Welby.’ Gayatri Devi uses the metaphor of gloves to describe the life she has created as a woman in medicine. ‘I tried on many gloves before I found the one that fit. I find I can use the tools of my trade so much the better for it. The fabric of my life is richer for my not fitting into a stereotype and, instead, accentuating those individual characteristics about me that are important for my profession.’ Like other women in medicine at the beginning of Act 3, Devi ‘has chosen the road less traveled and oh, the difference to me!’
For those looking for a critical reader on the social and political dimensions of women in medicine, this is not it. This book touches deep longing for sisterhood.

As a recent med school graduate, I found this book to be enlightening on many fronts. I have wrestled with similar issues and have had to make my own hard choices about my career and life, while living with the guilt and self-doubt of my decisions. This book touched a nerve with me because it presents the many issues women in the field of medicine have to deal with daily, and for the rest of their lives from the perspective of women who have tread this path and understand the complex conflicts and possibilities of being a woman and being in medicine. I especially enjoyed the section on the early pioneers of woman in medicine, as well as sections written by doctors who faced much harder decisions in their time, and helped make the options available to today's modern med school graduate possible. My favorite part though, is the way the editor culled not just stories and histories from her contributors, but POEMS which evoke the emotional struggle of women in medicine, that many have had to repress and not face in their daily hectic time short juggling routine. I found myself forced to stop running on the treadmill of life and really reflect. Thank you for helping me to really reflect on my own life in medicine and for helping me honor and respect those who have made the joys of medicine and womanhood possible for everyone.

Essential resource for all women in medicine

This book is not only informative and enlightening but enjoyable and inspiring. There is something in this book for everyone, whether you are a medical student, premed, physician or retired physician. Historians, feminists and the medical community will also find this book invaluable. 'This Side of Doctoring' is like a time-capsule of women in medicine, from the days of pioneer Elizabeth Blackwell to female medical students today (who are also still pioneering change in medicine). Lo Chin has compiled the who, what, why, when and how of women doctors. The stories, essays, and especially poems, capture the spirit of women physicians past and present. With more than 100 women's stories, it accurately portrays the sacrifices and rewards of this challenging career. I especially enjoyed the chapters on mothering, the early pioneers and barriers to women in medicine. Because it is an anthology, you can digest at your own convenience, read one piece or a chapter, good for busy women like me! It is a book to which I will constantly refer.

A wonderful resource and support for women physicians.

Having recently graduated residency with two young children, I couldn't stop reading this book. I want to plaster these essays on the cover of the Wall Street Journal: this is why medical training has to change! I am buying this book for all of my friends.
