A wonderful first Montessori Book

I am so happy that this book is available as it is one of the few Montessori books that has so many lovely photos. This book is for anyone interested in Montessori and has many easy and basic suggesions for setting up your home to be child friendly. Even if you do not intend to take your child to a Montessori school, you will be able to use this book at home for years and years. It has great birthday party suggestions which I have never seen in a Montessori book before. It is filled with great ideas.

This is not the book to get if you are looking for an introduction to Montessori schools. It is primarily geared toward the home.

Why is this out of print?

The impossible goal of this text is to start from scratch and then cover both incompleteness theorems in a single semester, and under his presentation it would almost be manageable. This is by far the best written text on predicate calculus I have read. Kaye and Goldrei can't really compare, as they contain less material and what they do cover isn't done quite as well. Enderton on the other hand covers more than Leary, but is much more dense and would not serve as well as an introduction.
The main drawback of the book is how much effort the author put into making it fit into a single semester. There is a lot of fascinating material that could have been covered in greater depth than is done. It is worth noting that he almost completely skips over propositional calculus, so if you find yourself struggling at the beginning of the book you may want to read up on that subject in another text (the first half of Goldrei would do nicely). Also the section on the second incompleteness theorem is extremely rushed; some of the properties of peano arithmetic used for the proof are not proven.
Still, it's better than the other options I've seen. You would think with all the mediocre mathematics texts Dover picks up they would have found this gem.

Beyond knowing the rudiments of naïve set theory, prerequisites should not be much of a concern.

Most Accessible Undergraduate Text Covering Incompleteness

I have used this text in both graduate and undergraduate courses as well as tutorials and independent studies. It is the best text for a one semester course that introduces formal logic and has as its goal the Incompleteness Theorems of Godel. Students have reported it to be very readable and the array of exercises is excellent. Moreover, the author is a really nice fellow.

what thou lovest well remains

This is Pauline Kael's 11th and final collection of the film reviews she wrote for The New Yorker, covering the period October 1988 to February 1991. In March 1991 the magazine quietly announced her retirement, due to the extent that the Parkinson's Disease she suffered from had incapacitated her. Her author's note begins wih a quote from Pound - "what thou lovest well remains" - which is an appropriate way to end the relationship she had with movies for over 2 decades, since her inspired reviews of movies of variable quality are Kael's heritage. Her praises here include Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Dangerous Liaisons, the doco Let's Get Lost, Batman, Casualties of War, My Left Foot, Drugstore Cowboy, The Grifters, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Vincent and Theo, and Enemies A Love Story. Her pans include Another Woman, Mississippi Burning, Rain Man, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Always, Postcards from the Edge, The Sheltering Sky, and The Bonfire of the Vanities. Some memorable quotes. Bird looks like he Clint Eastwood hadn't paid his Con Ed bill - the black actors are swallowed up in darkness. As Madame Sousatzka, Shirley MacLaine could be Norma Desmond's sma;;-town spinster sister. The reference in Beaches to the bad experience Bette Midler had on Jinxed! might have more impact if by then you weren't thinking back on Jinked! almostly fondly. People used to say that Gary Cooper was a fine actor - probably because when they looked in his face they were ready to give him their powder of attorney. In Born on the Fourth of July, Tom Cruise's hysteria is like a tennis pro falling to his knees and throwing his fists up in the air. A friend of mine broke up with his woman friend after they saw Dance with Wolves: she liked it. As soon as I got home from seeing it, I ran to the phone and warned him not to it with his new woman friend.

Kael's Last Hurrah!

This 6x9 350-page trade paperback edition of Ms. Kael's New Yorker film reviews, 85 compete reviews in all, is a very comfortable sized book for reading that has good-sized print also. Highly recommended for the film buff who wants incredible in-depth reviews of the major movies that came out from 1988-1991, the last period of Ms. Kael's wonderful career. For anyone who wants a really nice collection of her work that spans the 30 years from 1961 through 1991, however, I would recommend "For Keeps," her own selection of her best full-length reviews from her career. She is by far the most critical film critic I have encountered, and her reviews were generally not welcomed by film-makers and actors alike, but she was and is a wonder to behold as she dug down deep into movies to discover what merit they might deserve. When I first read her, she scared me off, but years later I came back to see if I had made a mistake, and I discovered that I had. I intend to keep her around and continue to learn from her.

A plumbing teacher's review

I use this book often in the shop/classroom. I think it is an excellent teaching aid when used in conjunction with the associated workbook. My only problem is converting some of the Minn. code into Massachusetts code where I teach. Several of the chapters deal specifically with plumbing traps, materials and plumbing fixtures, which I like. The workbook does a great job of using many different testing methods including True/False, multiple choice, essay questions, math and isometric sketching. In future editions I would love to see more info on the history of the trade, drawings/drafting and heating appliances. All in all, this is the best teaching book out there and I have looked through them all!

A good, solid book on plumbing

I first read and used this book in the US Navy Seabee training unit I was an instructor at in 1996. Being based on the Minnesota plumbing code, which is by far the most stringent in the country, it was a very good reference from which to learn and to teach. The company I work for now issues that same book to all new plumbers and I even keep a copy in the truck as a reference in the field. The companion workbook is a great tool also. If you're looking for a layman's breakdown of the MN code, this is it.

I Want to Be in This Play!

This play has Nora Ephron written all over it. It's a compilation of monologues--some, heartwarming and moving; others, downright hilarious--in which a variety of women tie specific memories of life events to what they were wearing at the time. I can't imagine there's a woman anywhere who couldn't identify with this play. Love it!

A Terrific Look at Women and the Clothes that define them

I enjoyed this play very much and hope to be performing it in the near future....it's richly funny and poignant at the same time. Nora Ephron had a lot to say and said it in a pleasant, funny, all-inclusive manner. She makes you proud and pleased to be a woman and welcomes you into the club!
