About the Author
Bill Nichols (Ph.D., UCLA) is Professor of Cinema at San Francisco State University. A leading (and founding) figure in the film studies community, Nichols is the editor of the seminal anthologies, Movies and Methods, Volumes 1 & 2 (1976; 1985) and the leading textbook in documentary film, Introduction to Documentary (2001). His other books include Ideology and the Image (1981), Representing Reality: Issues and Concepts in Documentary (1991), Blurred Boundaries: Questions of Meaning in Contemporary Culture (1995), and Maya Deren and the American Avant-Garde (ed., 2001).

Applying the Sociological Imagination to Cinema (for film scholars who don't actually care what sociology is)

Attempts to discuss film from a sociological perspective without actually acknowledging the field of sociology or any sociological terms. I appreciate where the guy is coming from, but why treat this social approach to film as a novelty when you could have drawn from richer material? Why introduce a term like "the social imaginary" when C. Wright Mills already coined "the sociological imagination" fifty years ago?

I bought the book as a required text in a film analysis course, but reading it really just made me wish the course was being taught by someone who actually had a background in sociology.

This book was peculiar. I was expecting something slightly more "engaging" when I read the title. However, that being said I read all the way until the end to give it the benefit of the doubt. There were numerous amounts of grammatical errors, in addition to the excessive amount of overly wordy ideas. The book was physically of proper quality, however, its contents were lackluster.

Depicts the brutality of the gulag in many short stories

I agree with the excellent reviews concerning Kolyma Tales. But I can add to Shalamovs description of the gulag. A few times he mentioned that political prisoners had the hardest time in the gulag because they had ideals and came from better circumstances than the typical prisoner. Within only a few months in the gulag they come to a shocking realization that they have abandoned their values and ideals simply to survive. They cannot believe who they have turned into.
The brutallity of the heavy labor was such that if any prisoner ended up in the hospital they did everything possible to make their condition worse or atleast not get better, If they have a cut, they would tear the wound open and shove dirt in to create infections etc.. In one story, the men were in a hospital, but were looking for a way out from working in a gold mine. A group of them got together some bread scraps so they could buy a stick of dynamite from another prisoner. They then proceed to all put one hand on the stick of dynamite and blow their fingers off. After they blew their fingers off they were elated, because they now will not have to work in the gold mines. That certainly illustrates how bad life was in the gulag.

My great uncle ended up in Siberia for 10 years, survived, and was able to return to his country Latvia. Interestingly in Kolyma Tales, Latvians were mentioned a couple times, and typically they all died because they were big (need more food) in comparison to the typical Russian prisoner.

This book is a collection of short stories, most of which are about 3 – 6 pages each.

Human suffering in Soviet Gulag labor camps

A collection of short stories depicting the horrors of Soviet labor camps in far east Siberia; written by a survivor of Kolyma camps each story is based on a single episode from inside the camps, most of them absolutely shocking. All political prisoners brought to Kolyma were working as slaves at outdoor gold mines, half a year in temperature up to -40C. These camps must have been worse than Nazi concentration camps. The book shows Soviet communist system as the most revolting political system in which a human being meant absolutely nothing. Most Americans would consider such an inhuman treatment of people as was happening in Kolyma Gulags is unthinkable; this book should be a mandatory reading in our High Schools as our young generations have a very poor knowledge of history...

He would have written like this. Bleak

I have read and reread this and will do so many times again. That this author isn't well known and upheld as a master in the literary canon is unconscionable. Imaging if Hemingway actually was a POW instead of out schmoozing upper-class proto-hipsters. He would have written like this. Bleak, stark, terribly clean, and fearful in it's nonchalant rendering of the inescapably fate of millions less fortunate and articulate. Anyone interested in WW2, Russia, History, POWs, Prison Labor, Siberia, Cold War, Political Dissent, Communism, etc. will find this fascinating. Along with anyone who appreciates immaculate prose that borders on poetry in it's stripped down simplicity. I'll stop gushing now. But seriously, it's that good.

A very good read.

About the Author

Norman J Ashford was Professor of Transport Planning at the Loughborough University of Technology, England from 1972 to 1997. He is the holder of bachelor, master and doctorate-level degrees in civil engineering. Dr. Ashford worked as a civil engineer in Canada and taught at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Florida State University. He served as the Director of the Transportation Institute Division of Universities for the State of Florida. Dr. Ashford runs an aviation consulting company and has been active in the areas of airport planning, design, operations, and privatization on more than 100 airports in more than 40 countries.

Dr. Pierre Coutu is the President of Aviation Strategies International (ASI) where he leads and guides a multi-disciplinary, international network of civil aviation experts who leverage their experience to provide value-added, senior-level strategic advice and analysis to ASI's world clients. With more than 35 years of experience in the airports business, Dr. Coutu has worked with the Canadian Transportation Ministry in various capacities related to airport management and development as well as with the International Aviation Management Training Institute (IAMTI) as Executive VP and COO, from 1987 to 1998, during which the Institute graduated close to 5,000 aviation executives from 150 different countries. Dr. Coutu has also been speaking at worldwide industry events and teaching airport management within aviation MBA programs at universities including Concordia University (Canada), Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (China), and Krems Danau University (Austria).

John R Beasley graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class Honors degree in Natural Sciences (Physics), is a Chartered Physicist, a Member of the Institute of Directors and a Member of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). He worked for Barclays de Zoete Wedd (BZW) as an investment analyst, publishing major research covering the defense and software sectors. In 2001, Beasley founded his own consultancy, Analytical Decisions, offering decision-making and policy implementation support.

Valuable insight of airport operations

I bought the kindle version of this book for a month, rather than wait, I decided to post a preliminary review.

The authors are having strong academical background and practical experience in civil aviation, therefore they have written one of the finest books on airport operations I have ever read. Yet it is a very serious piece of writing, at once scholarly and erudite, while suitable for different level of people who are working in aviation industry. As such, it bears re-reading and serious study.

This is a book for somebody who wish to grab the full picture to understand the complexity of the airport operation systems, the reader could understand the area of passenger, freight, and aircraft handling, the airport viewpoint on airline scheduling, the safety and security issues, sustainable development and environmental capacity of airports, etc. All the things in this book is across the world, the proposition are followed the rule setup by governmental like FAA and international organization like IATA and ICAO. The book just doesn't bored like reading the manual, and I suspect it will be immensely useful to any of us who are willing to understand the logic of transportation, as they are working in same principle.

Dr. Ashford is a well known author in airport planning. When I first entered airport as a operations staff in 8 years ago, I learn a lot from his previous book - Airport Operations. It is a must-read for me. The Airport Operations 3/E contains a treasure trove of knowledge, in sum, I highly recommended this book for everyone who interested in this topic.

THE book on airport operations

This is the third edition of a unique book in the area of airports, where there has been a recent wave of new books. This book is unique in the sense that it brings the reader the closest to the reality of airport daily life. This feature makes it very valuable for (less experienced) airport operators and managers as well as for planners and designers , who are often unaware of many operational details. It is also highly recommended for students in air transport and related fields.

This third edition has been written by a somewhat expanded team of authors, lead by Norman Ashford, one of the most prominent authors of (text)books on airports. Compared to the first two editions (1984 and 1997) this one has three new chapters on airport safety management systems, operations control centers, and sustainability and environmental capacity. The new chapters, together with the refreshment and updates of the whole text reflect the reality of the complex ever-changing world of airports.

Jane Palmer's first novel is a real find - definitely a specimen of higher lunacy. The Planet Dweller appropriates all the furniture of TV sci-fi and duly stands it on its head, with a wonderfully pragmatic absurdity - that's been done before, of course (Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams), but not quite this way. How characters quite as insane as these - menopausal Diana and the radio-astronomer Eva, 11-year-old Julia, and the drunken Russian eccentric, Yuri - turn out to be as plausible as anyone you'd find in the average bus-queue, I do not know; but at one time or another I've met all these people. Real people are always more incredible than fiction likes to think...

She also, with deft comedy, creates a Feminist who's literally the size of a planet, and that is a daunting prospect...

Nothing's a five

The Planet Dweller is a jolly little tale of a planetary sentient being and its new friends from Earth: a dissolute russian physicist who lives in Britain and a singular single mum. The ideas are good, the humour is delicate and it's worth three dollars of anyone's money. It is one of those little gems that gets lost in the hype and glitter of the blockbusters.
