Highly Engaging

First of all, let me preface this review by saying that I do not usually write reviews unless a book has really affected me in a positive way. This book definitely falls into that category.

My husband and I (both mildly myopic) purchased this book with the hopes of obtaining some exercises we could perform to strengthen our eyes to the point where we could ditch our glasses and contacts. This book does contain some great exercises (my husband did indeed improve his eyes and no longer wears glasses). The book also, however, contains so much more.

I was fascinated to read Liberman's explanations of various causes for why one's eyes would deteriorate in the first place. I definitely see how many of the causes he outlines apply to me. I notice how, for instance, that when I think hard or focus strongly upon something, I end up with headaches and my vision becomes worse. I love that Liberman also includes techniques for alleviating these issues and thus improving how the eyes see and process information.

By using the techniques in this book, I have significantly cut down on how often I need my contacts (only about once per week now). I am still working to eliminate them for good, but I feel confident that I will be able to.

This book is a very thorough, well-done treatise on how the eyes work, the intricate connection between the eyes and the mind, and how to improve one's vision naturally. Liberman has a definite talent for presenting technical information in an engaging, easy-to-understand manner. This book offers a great alternative for those seeking to correct their vision through natural means.

Comprehensive eye improvement book.

I believe that if a person is serious about improving eyesight that this book, if suggestions are followed and practiced with patience, will assist one in reaching eyesight goals. In fact one's world will change dramatically when one can see close up and at distance without glasses. My eyesight had been 20/50 in the right eye and the left eye had been seriously damaged by an operation to repair a retinal detachment. However, I now, according to the VA opthalmologist at my last eye exam, have 20/20 vision in my right eye; the damaged left eye is being suppressed so that I can, overall, see very well and don't need eye glasses any more (I passed my vehicle license eye exam for the first time ever - I am 73 years old). I would recommend reading this book and then developing an eyesight improvement plan based on what one is actually able to stick with and practice from day to day.

Take Off Your Glasses And See

I loved this book just for giving out the possibilities of taking your glasses off.
I read it during the first day of a long car trip and amazing things happened. I spent most of the first day on this book and saying affirmations and healing what it was that I hadn't wanted to see and by that first evening I could drive and read the book without my glasses on...using his chart before I left, I had 20/70 vision and using his book, affirmations and a little healing, I came back and found my vision to have changed to 20/40. That is one day of work and no eye exercises...he opens up your mind to the possibilities and then you take off from there...I'm grateful to the author and know that as soon as I take the time to go back to it, I will heal my eyesight completely...a must read!

Best Book on DBT I’ve Read

This book provides a fresh and much needed update to DBT. Dr. Pederson covers the essentials of DBT clearly and concisely, making this book a much better read and ultimately more helpful than Linehan’s textbook. Pederson makes a strong argument for flexible applications of DBT with the beginning of the book covering a lot of research to back up this position. He’s both convincing and it’s a refreshing change from more rigid (and elitist) adherent DBT therapists who seem to think there is but one take on DBT (dialectics anyone?).

It is clear from the book that Pederson does not worship Linehan but has reverence for the approach. For those looking for an understandable and thought-provoking presentation of DBT, this is it. Note that this book is not a skills manual, but a book on DBT as a theoretical orientation and how to apply it with clients. My only negative is about the price. I almost didn’t buy it because it is more expensive than other DBT books, but really the difference is skipping a couple stops at the coffee shop. I’m glad I didn’t let that stop me. Highly recommended!

It is one of the best resources I have every found on understanding and applying DBT in group and individual therapy. Su obra, centrada en dos temas fundamentales (los conflictos amorosos y los religiosos) se caracteriza por su corrección, precisión, sencillez y armonía; consideraba que la novela debe reflejar la vida, pero de una manera idealizada y embellecida, eliminando los aspectos penosos y crudos de la realidad, porque es un arte y su fin es la creación de la belleza.

A forgotten masterpiece.

'Pepita Jimenez', once considered the great 19th century Spanish novel, now lies neglected by most readers and critics. Neither Penguins, Everyman nor Oxford, the pre-eminent publishers of 'Classics', have ever produced an edition, and I only became aware of its existence by accident on the net.
Having just read - and loved - the novel, I can see some reasons for its decline in popularity. for a start, unlike most 19th century novels, it is not realistic or naturalistic; it does not portray a society with voluminous detail. The hero, Don Luis de Vargas, the son of an Andalusian squire and an aspirant to the priesthood, is prone to use the high-flown, ecstatic and orotund language of the spirit, which, though set up by Valera to be undermined, can irritate the reader with its verbosity. The translation, by Valera himself, needs to be updated for the tastes of a modern readership - the famed beauty of the original can appear washily sentimental in unforgiving English. Most importantly, the novel's sunny benevolence, its attempt to reconcile the totems of Spanish conservatism - the Church, the Aristocracy, the Family - with less tractable forces such as Love and Nature, is not fashionable with critics who historicise Spain as a country with violent divisions, and who want their fiction to conform to this vision.
for those willing to take the chance, however, 'Pepita' has something for everyone. Its story of a theologian and his attempts to repress a growing love for the title character, a young widow and the intended of his rakish father, has all the abundant romanticism, terrible tension and potential tragedy of 'Wuthering Heights'. From the novel's first page, when Don Luis describes to his uncle and mentor the Archbishop his first meeting with Pepita, we know what will happen - the interest lies in the unfolding of the inevitable and the psychology of the characters, especially Luis, whose sacred and profane raptures spring from the same source (in its relentless focus on an unstable and delusive psychology, 'Pepita' is closer to the works of Prevost, Constant and Stendhal, than later 19th century realists).
Though not a realistic novel, the book is full of indelible set-pieces of Andalusian village life (trade, social occasions, rites, customs, night-life, festivals, in which the Christian and the pagan are indistinguishable, just as they are in Luis' imagination); and the overwhelming natural beauty, the latter made to serve and reflect the claustrophobic visions and passions of the characters (in its limited focus, in its conflation of spiritual and romantic ideas and language, its slippery allegorical possibilities and its proto-Expressionism, 'Pepita' could be considered the Spanish Nathaniel Hawthorne).
For post-modernists, the novel's straightforward, simple narrative is contained in an elaborate framework, more familiar from Gothic fiction. Parts 1 and 3 consist of letters to the archbishop from his nephew and ward Luis, and his brother, found on his death with his effects. Part 2 consists of a 'paralipomena', a 'fictional' third person narrative continuing the story. The officious editor of these papers speculates in vain on the provenance of this fiction. His own conjectures, interpretations and asides throughout, his alarming tendency to 'edit' the material without explaining his procedures, together with Valera's profound irony, sensual displacement of sexuality and unexpected humour, casts doubt on the novel's seeming optimism, without once diminishing its nerve-wracking immediacy.

The story is good, a Spanish classic

The story is good, a Spanish classic, of course. It is considered one of the first psychological novels in Spain. It was really helpful to have the bilingual edition for my class, but the reason I am only giving it three stars is because it is pretty poorly translated. Every time there was a questionable phrase in English (which happened pretty frequently), I looked over at the Spanish side and the English was not a good translation of the Spanish text. I bought the bilingual edition because I needed the English for the sake of time, but I feel like it needed a lot of work. Hopefully someone comes out with a better translation.

Este cuento que habla del amor es a veces un poco aburrido, pero al lector le encantaria las palabras hermosas del don Luis. Si quiere aumentar su vocabulario y practicar leyendo, compre este libro.

A work of great interest which I may never have read through on my own. Having it read to me was great. There's not much humor in Herodotus but the most nearly valid account we have of the wars of the Greeks and the Persians.

But it is MacLean's aerial photography that forms this beautiful volume, giving heart and light to the land and all that is upon it. The dignity of Iowa farms, the quilted surface of agriculture in North Dakota, and the amazing markings in the Mojave somehow merge to give a sense of a sculpted nation waiting for MacLean to fly over it at low altitude to photograph and glorify. You've never seen anything like this

This book will change the way you look at and think about landscape. Technically, it's a landscape architecture book, and the essays that deal with that subject are excellent. James Corner is one of the best landscape architects/theorists around, and his writing is though-provoking, lucid and enjoyable to read. He draws an wonderful comparison between this work and Le Corbusier's sightseeing flights over North Africa in the 1930's. But without a doubt, the reason to buy this book are the photographs that document the unexpected beauty that arises out of the interaction between man and nature. The incongruities of landscape, juxtaposed against the linear certainty of the Land Ordinance Act grid, farm plots and other common interventions make for stunning photography.
There are also little subplots, such as creative reuses of already built spaces (tennis courts as parking lots & football field yard lines over a baseball diamond), and the similarity of totally unrelated natural forms (who knew that from 7,000 feet, cracked pond ice looks like microscopic images of streptococcal bacteria?).
There are dozens of other little thoughts I could include, and one of most remarkable things about this book is that the photogrpahs allow the reader to draw on his or her own knowledge to make connections and interpertations. There's no right or wrong way to see these things, which makes it universally rewarding and enjoyable.

Wonderful. Combines geography, mathematics, aesthetics

This is one of the nicest Christmas gifts I ever received. Two guys flew across the United States at low level taking wonderful photographs, many of which are worth framing as art. A geographer's reflection and insights on the frames draw attention to the cultural impact on the landscape of U.S. history, its varied immigrants, the rectangular land survey, and of the Western mathematics embedded in their choices.
No math teacher looking for an exciting resource that supports cross-disciplinary work would find this book except by accident. Nor would those who fly in small planes and want high quality, thoughtful, intellectual books that go beyond coffee-table glamour and reflect in a serious way about the earth beneath. Nor would somebody interested in cultural geography. This is because the cataloging-in-publication information is generic and unimaginative.

Great help for small museums

The book, Conservation Concerns, is not a large publication, but I found every page had advice, help, and examples of how to conserve historic artifacts. Included are recommendations on construction materials, storage of works, care of photographs and what to do if items are damaged. Textile and metal conservation is discussed. A detailed appendix is included with references to sources mentioned in the text and a reading list. I am very pleased with the purchase.

covering conservation concerns

This book is and excellent resource for institutions and collectors, who handle art. Put out by the Smithsonian Institue, the leader in art preservation, it lists how to protect art objects, in terms of: climate control handling, lighting, and general care. The book covers what objects can be damaged by what outside sources, and how to best prevent from enviormental damage, through proper storage techniques. It also gives resources for conservation suppliers and conservation centers.

This book covers a lot of material in 150 pages yet it contains 22 chapters beyond the introduction. Each concise chapter treats a different subject so you can easily find what you need. Various authors have contributed their expertise. The editor has united these voices into a useful guide. Diagrams illustrate storage possibilities and how some types of damage occur. An appendix gives a list of resources and is followed by a reading list.
