Great book for learning hieroglyphics...

This book is an easy 4.5 stars! This is an excellent book for someone serious about learning the Egyptian language through hieroglyphics. It is laid out like one large text book. By that, it has a lesson and then it has exercises where you are transliterating and translating hieroglyphics as well as taking English sentences and turning them into hieroglyphic. It is very thorough and no small undertaking. It will take someone already somewhat familiar with hieroglyphics countless hours to get through 400+ pages of text and exercises. It will work just as well for someone that has never dealt with hieroglyphics before as it starts at the beginning and works you into it. It does not assume that you know anything relating to the material. This is exactly what I was looking for as I truly want to get a working knowledge of hieroglyphics.

The only reason that I am not giving this book a full 5-stars is that there are no answers for the exercises at the end of each lesson. Therefore, anytime you are left completing an exercise that you are not 100% sure on there is no way to know for sure if you are right or should have done something slightly or completely different. It has led to me spending much time going back over the previous lesson/lessons to try and determine the accuracy of my work. This method probably just forces me to learn more than flipping to the answers and moving on but I would still appreciate the knowledge that what I have done is accurate.

This book also contains a very thorough sign-list, a lengthy Egyptian-English dictionary, and a smaller, but handy at times, English-Egyptian dictionary. This is a must have for anyone wanting to learn Egyptian hieroglyphics. It provides you with tons of information and the exercises to help you learn it.

A Great Reference book for the Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Grammar

I was taking a university course with a different book, and the PhD teaching the course stated that the Gardiner was the reference most widely accepted, especially when it came to the tables of Egyptian hieroglyphics and their classifications at the end of the book. It is a complete reference of the symbols used and more detailed than the book we were using.

KATHI KEVILLE is an internationally known herbalist and aromatherapist. The author of 12 books, she has taught seminars for more than 40 years and is the director of the American Herb Association in Nevada City, California.

MINDY GREEN has worked in the natural products industry for more than 35 years. She is a founding member of the American Herbalists Guild and is the clinical aromatherapist for the Aveda Corporation in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

This book is it!!

Confused and disappointed with aromatherapy books that threw out disjointed information, expected you to be a chemist in reciting plant properties, or assuming you have 50- 100 essential oils for mixing concoctions (without giving precise recipe amounts), I started inter-library loaning - to finding more books. Someone had to understand that a) there were people that didn't know the first thing about this subject (and weren't interested in chemical compositions of essential oils) 2) wanted a reference book for specific situations (ie illnesses or natural beauty enhancement)and 3) didn't have $1000 to make this their overpriced hobby.

Kathi has written an orderly basic book for those of us who are just starting out, and tired of the side effect laden concoctions from pharmaceuitical companies. She starts with fascinating stories how through the ages, essential oils have kept people well. Next, she talks about how the sense of smell affects our health. She goes on to discuss the many uses for aromatherapy in medicine for anxiety, depression, insomnia stress fatigue and other uses.

I liked how she talked extensively about the safety issues in essential oils (as opposed to info I received from MLM true believers who skip warnings about issues such as liver safety in prolonged use of some of the more powerful oils). THESE OILS NEED TO BE UNDERSTOOD before just using them willy-nilly. She lists varying toxicity of different oils and why they are so to be used sparingly, if at all.

She has more, specific recommendations for dilution, for body oil, massage oil, in the bath, steam bowl inhaling, foot and sitz baths and so on. She even has a chapter on how to make your own herb infused oils, salves and vinegars.

Kathi recommends 10 basic oils (with a few added for women's issues) and gives recipes sticking mainly to those same recommended ones. Then she starts with her recipes for therapies (for digestive, bowel, repiratory, eye, ear, muscular, urinary, yeast problems and so on). There's a long list with recipes and how many drops of each to use. She then goes into the beauty angle with body and hair care. There are chapters on oil distillation and finding pure unadulterated essential oils. Plus, finally she lists about 50 oils, what they do medicinally and emotionally.

All in all, I find this a step by step book for the uninitiated. It's good to know there's someone so caring to explain things simply. THIS IS THE BOOK YOU NEED IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER. All the rest I have read seem pure junk in comparison.

Educational, inspirational, and easy-to-read

Such a great book. It's user-friendly and I reference it all the time. It has great explanations and quick-reference charts. I bought it for an aromatherapy course I took in college, and I learned so much from it. It has lead to many beautiful and helpful creations for my family, friends, and myself. I really appreciate how it's so organized and thorough. I highly recommend it to anyone who is just starting out with essential oils, or who wants to expand their knowledge of the chemistry and history of aromatherapy.

Very Interesting

I am new to Aromathearapy and this book gave me more than what I was looking for - in both a good and unexpected way. On the one hand, I've learned a lot about the history and the book goes into more detail about certain aspects (the Chemistry of the oils, for example), which I love. On the other hand, I was sort of looking for a quick and simple book that said "here's the science, here's a list of all the things you can accomplish with aromatherapy with accompanying oil, here's the different ways to use the oils, and here's a list of precautions to consider." This book did not do as much of that as I would like but I'm still glad I made the purchase because I ended learning a lot and this expanded my interest. I'd still recommend this for a beginner but maybe I would have chosen it as my second book instead of my first because it's far more than a basic overview. That being said, it's a great investment and you can find a lot of the things I was initially looking for online.

Turn Around Leadership Principles...(Not Formulae)...Uniquely Individualized for Each of Us

At last! I am so pleased that Drs. Brown, Penfold & Westra have brought us pastors a process unique to each of us Pastor Unique: Becoming a Turnaround Leader...not another generalized program for everybody to implement in the same way.

I was encouraged by the way these authors offer us individual leadership components identified through the highly acclaimed "Birkman Method(TM)" personality inventory. I am learning much from my own individual results as the authors teach how I personally share some (and not other) "TurnAround Pastor" (TAP) common traits. They show me the researched and scientifically verified "best practices" common to effective TAPs, then offer to coach me (and you) in those "best practices" I was very interested to learn the leadership style of those who have "successfully" led a plateaued or dying church into Christ-centered, mission focused, outreach oriented beacons of light in their communities, then learn that I can be coached to lead in a similar way.

Besides learning about myself, I have been blessed to help pastors in our Conference discover their God-given uniqueness for nearly a year. Soon we will participate in the signature "TAP Boot Camp" training (recommended in this book) learning how to apply these principles in our own individual ways. True to the process these authors present, our pastors and "their" layperson leaders who are committed to applying these identified "best practices" will take their own unique plan back home to implement in their local plateaued and/or dying churches.

None of this could be accomplished in such a unique way without the work of these authors as explained in their book. I believe with all my heart that these Biblically-sound authors have arrived on scene, now, to be used by God before so many of our American churches completely fade away and die in the next few years.

I highly recommend you, pastor or layperson, desperately seeking to bring life to your congregation, read and apply this important guide before it's too late for your congregation.
