Be Aware of What You're Getting Here! And NOT Getting...

The main point about this book is that it is not really a book at all! It consists of about 40 pages of short chapters on various aspects of handguns, followed by about 150 pages of product listings taken pretty much entirely from the analogous sections of Gun Digest-that is, pictures of handguns with brief specifications and a list of prices. If you are interested in 40 pages of VERY elementary articles on handguns, this might be the book for you. For the rest of the book, you'd do better to get the most recent Gun Digest from your local library.

Free to be Human

Eugene Kennedy has been one of my favorite authors since my high school years. He is really in tune with the human nature and how human beings are related to their creator (even though he does not dwell much on this). I have read and made every effort to have his books by me. He is practical, down to earth, and realistic. I will recommend his books as companions to the Scriptures (i.e. depending on one's orientation)and to everyone who wants to face life as it is. There is no escape from real life. I am always fascinated by Eugene Kennedy's writings. He is a gem. He has made me come to love psychology. But too bad, I am now too old to take such a program.

A very good book, indeed, but you'd better know your math!

Basically, this is a great book. I couldn't put down, really. It's sort of a 'everything you always wanted to know about modeling' book, and the author went to great lenghts to compress a huge amount of material in one handsome, managable volume without becoming superficial or less rigorous.
The only thing I'm not happy with is the author's own description of prerequisites: he claims the book is self-contained, and only requires "some calculus and linear algebra". In reality, readers had better be comfortable with complex numbers, operators, coordinate systems, probability theory and various other topics of mathematical physics. And instead of "some" calculus, there is serious calculus involved here. Laplace transforms, the 'del' operator and various other more-or-less advanced topics are presented in the first chapter in a way that suggests the reader's familiarity with them. To those of us that are familiar with these concepts, the book is a delight. To those of us that are not, the book is likely to be too fast-paced and advanced.

Great summary of applied mathematics

This book concisely describes critical ideas, techniques, and results of a wide range of applied mathematics which are useful in physical modelings. It has well chosen exercises, though not many, with detail answers. It provides good references for further study. This is important because the explanations given in this book are terse.
I think the book is more valuable for those looking for concise reviews than those wanting to learn the materials the first time.
Also, Author states (at MIT website) that he is working on the second edition for this book. He wants to add "control theory" and correct some typos.

A great overview of Mathematical Modeling

Very readable and enjoyable book if you like Applied Mathematics. In addition to very broad but not shallow coverage of the various techniques used to model physical phenomena, the author provides *excellent* references for those who want to dig further. The Matlab code and computer techniques are an excellent addition.
I agree with the previous reviewer, the book will become a classic.

Wonderful debut novel!

I saw this on Amazon and the cover really captured my attention. This kind of a had a mermaid vibe, but the author gave it her own unique twist and it was absolutely wonderful. It had all the aspects that I love: a beach setting, mystery, romance, and dark secrets. My favorite thing was that the book is told from both POV's, so I got a good look into both of their minds

Noah was such a intriguing young man, passionate and caring, yet understandably guarded, and not to mention very handsome. I really admired his loyal friendship with Erin.
And the things he did for Caris were very swoon worthy. I loved Caris as the narrator, she was brave, fun and I enjoyed her curious nature. The connection between Noah and Caris was very strong and I loved their moments together.

There was no cliffhanger, which I was very happy for, but I am very excited to know that this is a series. I am definitely looking forward to more of Noah and Caris, and the other characters from the Emerald series.

I couldn't really get into it

I liked this book and I didn't. I loved that the author took the time to really develop the characters. They did grow and change but I felt that Caris could have done a better job at getting a grip on things going on. I know that her summer was completely life altering, but I think that she was a little whiny about it.
I really had a hard time getting to love the characters. I wish I had been able to get connected but I couldn't. I won't be continuing the series if there are more books.

An interesting twist on the typical mermaid story.

I've been eager to read a mermaid book for a while - and while the waterbreathers aren't technically mermaids (no tails and they don't live solely underwater), this book pretty much hit the spot.

The negatives:

Some grammatical errors.
The book could have used a good edit - the errors were not egregious, but they were definitely noticeable.

A bit of a slow start.
I felt like the beginning of the book was a little bit slow. There were quite a few mysteries set up - about who Caris' mom really is and what happened to Noah's brother - but it took till about 40% before you got any real answers. The book was still enjoyable before that, but it occasionally felt a bit slow.

What I loved:

The waterbreathers.
I thought that James did a great job of creating the world of the waterbreathers. It was definitely different from what I was expecting - I thought that they were going to be something along the lines of mermaids, but they really weren't. They're more like people who can breathe underwater and have some other powers - but they live in regular society, not underwater. A lot of the book had to do with the relations between the waterbreathers and the regular humans. Many of the humans knew about the waterbreathers, and not all of them were thrilled about it.

Complex family relationships.
The family relationships in this book were complicated, to say the least. Caris grew up without her mother and her father has never told her anything about her. There are so many mysteries surrounding Caris and her family (and it just gets more and more complicated). Then there's Noah's family - his father was dead and his brother was missing - presumed dead. These complex family relationships really added to the book.

Caris and Noah.
I was worried at first that the connection between Caris and Noah was going to turn into insta-love, but luckily it didn't work out that way. Instead their romance moved at a very reasonable, slow pace, which I definitely appreciated. Meanwhile, the connection between them was strong, and I definitely found myself rooting for them.

Waterborn was a great paranormal romance. While the book didn't end on a cliffhanger, I think there's plenty more of this story to tell and I hope there will be another book to follow up. I give it 4/5 stars.

must have for Napoleonic study

A companion piece to the author's Nelson's Trafalgar Captains and Their Battles, Wellington's Peninsular War Generals & Their Battles covers the lives of forty-one of the best known divisional commanders, heads of supporting arms and services (i.e. artillery, cavalry and supply), and principal staff officers of Wellington's Army in Spain from 1808 to 1812.
The book is divided into two distinct sections, the first consisting of the biographies conveniently arranged alphabetically, and the second consisting of the battles these men fought in, arranged chronologically, beginning with the Low Countries in 1793 and ending with Waterloo in 1815. At the end of each battle entry is a list of generals in the book who participated in each. There is an Introduction wherein the author discusses the promotion system, the purchase of commissions and the importance of patronage in Georgian England.
As any reputation would pale when next to Wellington's (not to mention his own low opinion of practically everybody), a close look at these men and their careers reveals extensive active service both before and often after the war against Napoleon. Also revelatory are the facts that most of them came from or married into titled families; almost half of them were of Scottish descent; and two were Germans.
All in all, this book is informative, well written and an essential reference tool for those interested in the period.

Excellent Manual Of Contemporary Northern American Psychoanalysis.

Very useful reference book for understanding the state of art of the contemporary Northern American psychoanalytical writings. The authors were absolutely right to do not opt for a kind of "universal salad". There are only modest adventures in the fields of either British (Kleinian and Bionian) or different French schools theorizings. The Northern American psychoanalytical tradition is rich and interesting for foreign researches per se, and other traditions would be certainly better explicated otherwise, and by those who were taught, and who practiced elsewhere.

I recently boguht this book from here. To my shock, this book is a word for word copy of Prof. James Lee's (Professor Emeritus, Chemical Engineering, Washington State University) popular text book (Biochemical Engineering - ISBN 0-13-085317-8)!! It is a shame that the publisher published this book without even cross checking!! Dr. Lee's book can be downloaded online for ~$25.

Recognising the need for practical examples and illustration to convey the step-by-step approach, each chapter is enhanced with a number of interesting features. About the Author
Abraham (Bram) P. Buunk has been an Academy Professor in Evolutionary Social Psychology at the University of Groningen, on behalf of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, since 2005. His main current interest is the application of evolutionary theorizing to human social behaviour. He has published widely on applied topics, including professional burnout, jealousy, absenteeism, AIDS-prevention, loneliness, depression, marital satisfaction, well-being among the elderly, and coping with cancer. He is co-editor of Health, coping and well-being: Perspectives from social comparison theory (Erlbaum, 1997), and Solidarity and Prosocial Behaviour (Springer, 2006). He has served on scientific boards for the Dutch Cancer Foundation (NKB-KWF), and the Dutch AIDS Foundation. He was a member of the Programme Committee on Evolution and Behaviour of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Currently Bram Buunk is conducting research in Latin America on various applied psychology themes.

Mark Van Vugt is Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology at VU University, the Netherlands, and he holds honorary positions at the University of Oxford and the University of Kent, United Kingdom. He started his academic studies in Psychology in the Netherlands and he worked at various universities in the UK before returning to his birth town Amsterdam to take on a professorship in Psychology. He has published over 100 articles in outlets such as Nature, Psychological Science, and the American Psychologist on various topics in social, organizational and evolutionary psychology, including leadership and management, altruism and cooperation, social identity and intergroup conflict, sex differences, transport and environmental sustainability. He is a former Associate Editor of Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and co-author of several books, including a trade book on leadership, titled “Selected”(Profile/Harper, 2010) . Mark Van Vugt is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and blogs on Psychology Today.
