Ambrose's D-Day: June 6, 1944 relies on over 1,400 interviews with veterans, as well as prodigious research in military archives on both sides of the Atlantic. A major theme of the book, upon which Ambrose would later expand in Citizen Soldiers, is how the soldiers from the democratic Allied nations rose to the occasion and outperformed German troops thought to be invincible. Ambrose's account of the D-Day fighting on the Normandy beaches and bluffs is unsurpassed for detail, emotion and suspense. Quoting liberally from the recollections of participants, he reveals how the massive cross-Channel effort stretched back two years and involved millions of people. He describes the choice of the site and date of the landings, the planning and special training, ship loading and embarkation, and finally the amphibious assault itself--that moment when "the Western democracies made their fury manifest." Ambrose, director of the Eisenhower Center at the University of New Orleans, interprets events as the narrative unfolds and much of what he has to say is bracing. He concludes, for example, that German military leadership was abysmal that day, even at the small-unit level; that Allied elite units such as Airborne, Rangers and Commandoes were superior in fighting ability to those the enemy had in the field; and that the German reliance on fixed defensive positions, the so-called Atlantic Wall, was one of the greatest blunders in history. World War II buffs have always liked books about the Normandy invasions, but most popular accounts are now several years old. Ambrose has updated the familiar story of the massive amphibious landings with new information, deft historical perspective, and a gripping narrative. Several opening chapters about the strategic situation and the laborious preparations for the invasion keep this book from becoming just another battlefield drama. His portraits of the various military commanders are superb. Numerous interviews with Allied veterans provide fresh material for the vital human element of the story, and accounts from German survivors show the enemy's viewpoint. The result is the best popular history since Max Hastings's vigorous Overload: D-Day and the Battle for Normandy (LJ 6/1/84), detailed enough for the historian yet with plenty of action for the lay reader. Recommended for public and military collections.

It is a compelling book to read and gives insight to one of the greatest events in human history

The author extensively researched thousands of interviews to come up with a first person narrative on D Day. He systematically looks at the battle from all perspectives (Allies, German and civilian,) including an account of each of the 5 landing beaches Omaha, Utah, Juno, Sword, Gold and the pre dawn paratroop drops that went so badly. It is a compelling book to read and gives insight to one of the greatest events in human history. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in World War II history. The book ris a study in perseverance, determination and the will to overcome whatever obstacle that one may face.

Awesome book from a super author. Stephen Ambrose has taken you virtually there through his words. He has detailed both sides and compared and contrasted both pro's and con's of the days leading to the invasion through. I've read this once before but reread it before actually going to Normandy. Standing on the beaches and remembering his words brought a whole new meaning that the placards could not give.

About the Author
During his career, Dr. Clois E. Kicklighter was a nationally known educator and the author of several books in the fields of architecture, drafting, and construction technology. He held a variety of industrial, teaching, and administrative positions and retired as dean and professor at the School of Technology at Indiana State University. He held the highest leadership positions in the National Association of Industrial Technology (NAIT). Dr. Kicklighter was awarded the respected Charles Keith Medal for exceptional leadership in the technology profession. Timothy L. Andera is a Professor at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. During the tenure at SDSU, he has served as the Coordinator of Career and Technical Education in the College of Education and Human Sciences and is currently a Safety Consultant in the College of Engineering. Dr. Andera received his doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Construction from Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois. His master's degree from Bemidji State University is in Industrial Technology with an emphasis in Construction. He received bachelors' degrees in Vocational Education and Industrial Technology in Construction from the University of South Dakota in Springfield, South Dakota. Dr. Andera has served as the Director of Education and Safety at Associated Builders and Contractors in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He taught Construction Management at Illinois State University, overseeing courses in Architecture, Construction, Scheduling, and Masonry, as well as coordinating the On-Site Construction Project. Dr. Andera oversaw the Residential Construction Program at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls, Iowa, where students built a brick veneered residential home each year. Dr. Andera has presented nationally and internationally on construction and safety topics. He is a consultant on construction projects related to the masonry industry and construction in general.

Great source for beginners

I've been playing chess for a while, but never seriously. Recently I started to play on chess.com and was willing to improve a little bit my skills, and this book totally filled the gaps I had on this openning. It is not the ultimate book for advanced players, it is for begginers and casual players, like me, and I tottaly recommend it.

Hipocrytical

This is a crazy fundamentalist book which falls far from the tree of true Christianity. It's a disgraceful peek inside the inner workings of the church. To dominate education and business and to discriminate against all those who do not follow these crazy ideals. What is worse is it is all backed by tax cuts and government funding. Why do we fund these nut jobs? Fairness and equality for all? I don't think so.

This is a fabulous program!

This assessment is very useful for students of all ages. The way it is broken into specific target sections makes it successful for various stages in a students functional ability. This program may also be used in conjunction with the origional ABLLS-R assessment. The AFLS will be effective in teaching the student functional skills at home, school and in the community as well as basic self help skills.
Functional skills begin very basic, however they build upon each other to develop a person able to function well in the community and become more self sufficient in the home.

A MUST BUY

I found these books exceptional and , imperative. If you have a child with ASD, or are a teacher, or therapist, these are absolutely necessary in creating programs and next steps for your child. My child has benefited and , is gaining more skills everyday. I love the assessment at the back of the book!
