Hector Chetwode-Talbot, Eck to his friends, has left the army and is slightly at a loss as to what to do next, when he is approached by an old army pal, Bilbo Mountwilliam. Bilbo runs an investment fund company and business is booming. Bilbo persuades Eck to join the company as a 'greeter' for moneyed clients. All Eck has to do is supply the contacts with entertainment and large G&Ts and then the fund managers will do the rest.

Soon Eck is able to buy himself a luxury sports car and decadent flat. It is on a golfing trip to France that Eck first meets Charlie Summers, a fly-by-night entrepreneur whose latest scheme is to import Japanese dog food into the UK. Soon Charlie lands on Eck's doorstep with his suitcase, intent on staying and relaunching his dog food business in the area. But with the financial crash looming, Eck begins to ask himself if they are so very different....

Very pleasant little story

Can't say much more than this was entertaining with a bit of pathos - nothing sensation, gory or sexy - just an old-fashioned piece of entertainment.

“Arrangements were then made to show Charlie to his room. This turned out to be a servant’s room, a long way from the rest of the bedrooms, and showed no sign of recent use. There was a small bed about five feet long, a washbasin and not much else in the way of decoration. A bathroom with a lino floor across the corridor was thrown in as additional hospitality. It was lit by one of the new low-energy bulbs, which seemed barely to register any form of electric current, emitting a glow similar to what might have been produced by half a dozen fireflies”

The Hopeless Life of Charlie Summers is the fourth novel by British author, Paul Torday. After ten years in the army followed by a few in private security, Hector Chetwode-Talbot (Eck to his friends) is at a loose end. Then he gets a call from Bilbo Mountwilliam, a few years ahead of him at school and now fabulously rich, thanks to the hedge fund he runs. Bilbo offers Eck a well-paying position: all he has to do is entertain his well-off friends and get them interested in investing in Mountwilliam Partners.

His job sees him in the south of France, playing golf with his friend, Henry (Lord) Newark when they first encounter Charlie Summers, looking rather shop-worn, in hiding from HM’s Customs and Revenue regarding certain VAT irregularities. But Charlie is nothing if not resilient, and is soon back in the country with (yet another) get-rich-quick scheme, this one involving Japanese dog food. His audacious plans see him establishing himself in Gloucestershire and trading on a case of mistaken identity.

Eck has always had a niggling feeling about the ethics of his job, and finds himself even more wary when Bilbo has him meeting with a mysterious Afghan. The feeling that he is being followed is dismissed: he is distracted by his ever growing feelings for his second cousin, Harriet. And then the Global Financial Crisis begins to bite: “…the invisible, locationless money ebbed and flowed around the world, a great tide of wealth. Each high tide was higher than the last; each low tide less marked. No one quite knew where it all was, or which debts were going to be repaid, and which not. Yet, here and there, one or two people were beginning to ask: where’s the money?”

In this novel, Torday explores the environment that produced the GFC, as well as touching on money laundering, greed (of course!) and guilt. Also featured are con-men (of varying degrees of magnitude), emetic dog food, beetroot-coloured wine, a few somewhat careless jihadists, an unexpected inheritance, green hair dye, a friendly-fire incident and a kidnapping.

Torday’s characters are wholly believable: each has their strengths and weaknesses, and the decisions they make in life are completely understandable. Several of the characters have appeared in earlier novels, notably Harriet Chetwode-Talbot, Eck, Charlie and Elizabeth Gascoigne. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, and only the most cynical reader will not choke up toward the end. Torday just keeps getting better, and readers who enjoy this book will look forward to The Legacy of Hartlepool Hall. Just brilliant!

I really like Paul Torday. He writes just a snapshot of someone's life rather than the entire life. its makes for easy reading and he brings up good points that are current in society. i would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading for pleasure.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Clara, a young slave, works as a seamstress and dreams of freedom. Overhearing drovers talk of escaping North enables her to make a patchwork map of the area. When she escapes, she leaves the quilt behind to guide others. Based on a true event, this is a well-written picture book. Ransome's oil paintings, however, are perhaps too smooth and rich for the story they tell. The world depicted is too bright, open, and clean. For example, in the first scene Clara has been put to work in the cotton fields. Supposedly too frail to last long at such work, she is pictured as a slim, serious, yet sturdy girl. The bright yellow sky and the charming smile of the boy with her belie the realities of the back-breaking work. In another scene, young Jack, who has been brought back the day before from running away, looks solemn, but not distressed, and is wearing what appears to be a freshly ironed white shirt. Again, the image distances viewers from the realities of the situation. Clara's escape to Canada, too, is marvelously easy, although she does say, "But not all are as lucky as we were, and most never can come." It is not easy to present the horrors of slavery to young children; thus, even though Ransome's illustrations, and to some extent the text, err on the side of caution, this is an inspiring story worth inclusion in most collections. --Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY

When Sweet Clara, not yet 12, is taken from her mother and sent from North Farm to Home Plantation as a field hand, she's put in the care of ``Aunt Rachel,'' not ``my for-real blood aunt, but she did her best.'' Fearing for Clara's health, Rachel teaches her to sew and is lucky enough to get her a place in the Big House, where Clara listens, learns, and saves scraps that she eventually pieces into a map-quilt showing the way to the Ohio and freedom. The troubles Clara escapes are so muted here that her accomplishment seems almost too easy; in a straightforward narrative flavored with dialect, she mentions that recaptured slaves might be beaten and describes her grief at leaving her mother, but Ransome's moving depiction of the hug when the two are reunited on the way north is a more poignant clue to the pain of their separation. What's emphasized are Clara's resolve and creativity and the accomplishment of winning her freedom; in the same vein, Ransome depicts the characters as sturdy, purposeful, and mutually supportive and sets them in colorful landscapes eloquently proclaiming the earth's beauty. Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkins

This story is told through the eyes of a young slave named Clara. Clara was taken from her mama, so when she arrives at the new plantation a woman named Rachel befriends her. Aunt Rachel, as she becomes known, notices that Clara is not enjoying working in the cotton fields. Aunt Rachel teaches Clara how to sew and Clara eventually starts working in the Big House. While working in the Big House she pays close atttention to the others as they talk and describe the areas around the plantation. Clara secretly goes every night and works on the quilt made of the scraps from the Big House. Clara makes a beautiful quilt in hopes that it will help her and others escape to freedom. Read more to find out what happens to Clara and the others. The illustrations in this story showed how the people of that time period looked, dressed, and worked. Ransome's illustrations enhanced Hopkins' delightful story of Clara and the quilt. The author and illustrator accurately portray specific cultures and customs of the ethnic situation. Overall, this was a delightful story to add to any classroom discussion on the topic of freedom and slaves.

As a fourth grade reading teacher in Texas I read SWEET CLARA to my students as a Texas "Bluebonnet Book". I found it to be an interesting, easily understood book, with a feeling of mystery. In other words, "I loved it!"

I discovered SWEET CLARA AND THE FREEDOM QUILT when I was doing a little research into the Underground Railroad. It has been a long-standing theory that patchwork quilts were used to help the enslaved people to escape by the encoded messages in the quilt patterns. This story is another take-off on that traditional idea.

Clara, a slave girl under the age of twelve, was sent away from her mother to another plantation to work in the fields and pick cotton. She makes friends with Young Jack who sees that she's unhappy and not eating and advises her that she must eat to have the strength to be a field worker. Clara now shares a cabin with an older woman, who is kind to her and though unrelated, is called Aunt Rachel.

Aunt Rachel also sees that Clara may not be strong enough to be a field laborer, and over a period of time teaches Clara the art of sewing. Once she can learn to sew, she can work with Rachel at the Big House. Clara proves to be an apt pupil and eventually becomes a seamstress and goes to work for the mistress of the plantation.

The sewing room is next to the kitchen so that Clara meets a lot of people who move around the countryside. She also hears stories about the Underground Railroad, which is a group of people who help slaves to escape. As Clara listens to the people talking, she begins to question them about the surrounding land and decides to make a map out of sewing scraps. Eventually the quilt map is completed and Clara and Jack are ready to leave the plantation and go north to find the Ohio River, and head for Canada. Since Clara had memorized the quilt map, she left it behind so that others could use it too, and escape to the North.

The illustrations by James Ransome are excellent. The drawings are colorful and the expressions on the faces of the characters are wonderfully presented. My favorite illustration and excerpt takes place when Clara is leaving the plantation, and Aunt Rachel advises, "Before you go, just cover me with your quilt, Sweet Clara," she says, "I'm too old to walk, but not too old to dream. And maybe I can help others follow the quilt to freedom."

About the Author

The #1 Indispensible Teaching Book

Simply put: This book covers all the bases. If you are a new teacher stressing out, this book is a must. If you are a veteran teacher searching for that spark you had a few years ago, this book is the answer. For whatever reason, colleges do a really poor job preparing this country's soon-to-be teachers. All I remember learning about in my EDU classes were countless theories and how to write five-page lesson plans.

Once I started teaching I quickly realized that my college professors didn't prepare me for the realities of teaching. (All of you veterans out there know exactly what I am talking about.) Anyhow, if you are looking to be more successful in the classroom, at any point in your career, pay the $20 and if this book takes away just one headache during your next month of teaching then it was worth it.

There are better books, I hope

I had to read this book for a classroom management class for my teaching degree and had a hard time getting through it. There is a lot of practical advice that might work, but it's buried in too many stories. Plus, Jones' tone is very arrogant and condescending. The only thing I really got out of it was the explanation of how PAT works, and then he started picking on a hypothetical kid named Larry. There are better books, I hope.

Classroom Magic

This is the best book on classroom management I have read. It is filled with humorous, real classroom examples that every teacher will recognize. There are plenty of ideas that can be used immediately. They are not labor intensive and they can be adapted for a variety of subjects and age groups. You can modify difficult behavior and keep your sense of humor. I teach middle school math. I moved a few desks, changed my lesson order a little, changed how I answered questions and my class is more productive. This common sense approach to classroom discipline is just the kind of book a busy teacher needs. When class runs smoothly, teaching is more fun for both the teacher and the students; this book will make that easier to achieve.

About the Author
Steve Zumdahl is the author of market-leading textbooks in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, honors-level chemistry, and high school chemistry. Recently retired from his long-time position as Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to chemical education. These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Donald J. DeCoste is Associate Director of General Chemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and has been teaching chemistry at the high school and college levels for 26 years. He earned his BS in Chemistry and PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. At UIUC he has developed chemistry courses for nonscience majors, preservice secondary teachers, and preservice elementary teachers. He teaches courses in introductory chemistry and the teaching of chemistry and has received the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award four times. Don has led workshops for secondary teachers and graduate student teaching assistants, discussing the methods and benefits of getting students more actively involved in class. When not involved in teaching and advising, Don enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.

from Wikipedia: George Gaylord Simpson (June 16, 1902 - October 6, 1984) was an American paleontologist. Simpson was perhaps the most influential paleontologist of the twentieth century, and a major participant in the modern evolutionary synthesis, contributing Tempo and mode in evolution (1944), The meaning of evolution (1949) and The major features of evolution (1953). He was an expert on extinct mammals and their intercontinental migrations. He coined the word hypodigm in 1940, and published extensively on the taxonomy of fossil and extant mammals. Simpson was influentially, and incorrectly, opposed to Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift. He was Professor of Zoology at Columbia University, and Curator of the Department of Geology and Paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History from 1945 to 1959. He was Curator of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University from 1959 to 1970, and a Professor of Geosciences at the University of Arizona until his retirement in 1982.

A must read for evolutionary ecologists

I read a number of papers and books while studying for my qualifying exam and this was my favourite by a long shot. Simpson writes in an informative yet entertaining manner and many of his ideas (such as those about adaptive zones) are still informative today. A great synthesis of a broad subject by a writer well versed in ecology, evolution, and palaeontology. If you want a good feeling for "state of the art" then and now, read this book, then read Schluter's The Ecology of Adaptive Radiation.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT EVOLUTIONARY THEORY BOOK BY G.G. SIMPSON

George Gaylord Simpson (1902-1984) was one of the most influential American paleontologists of the twentieth century. This is one of his most significant theoretical works.

He notes that "The rate of evolution of any character or combination of characters may change markedly at any time in phyletic evolution, even though the direction of evolution remain the same."

Acknowledging that there are `quite rigid limitations on what a mutation can accomplish," he notes that seemingly major changes in Drosophila fruit flies "does not produce new structures, wings ... but only produces the wings characteristic of the system in an additional place." He also admits candidly that "Where relatively large mutations are concerned, they usually do not persist or do not come to characterize whole populations unless they are accompanied by more numerous smaller mutations tending to modify and to integrate the effects of the larger mutations."

Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Eldredge's theory of punctuated equilibrium accepted some of Simpson's statements, such as "...in rare instances small populations would provide for possible rapid changes over short periods of time."

Simpson asserts that "...most evolutionary change is adaptive.... An essential factor is the entrance, figuratively or literally, of populations into environments that are in some respect new to them." In most cases, "...when one group replaces another of similar adaptive type, a common phenomenon in the record, much the most probable interpretation is that one of the other evolved elsewhere and is a rather recent migrant where found." But "There is no reasonable alternative to the conclusion that when a trend stops short of other limits, it has reached an adaptive limit."

Simpson---who wrote an entire book on Horse evolution (Horses: The Story of the Horse Family in the Modern World and through Sixty Millions Years of History)---rejects many common statements about horse evolution: "The most famous of all equid trends, `gradual reduction of the side toes,' is flatly fictitious. There was no such trend in any line of Equidae." He adds that `eohippus was NOT a horse, (and) is about as good an ancestor for Rhinoceros as for Equus."

Simpson's book is important for anyone interestested in evolutionary theory.

moore show. rhoda was portrayed by actress valerie harper. the author of this book interviewd her and also

Unlike any other design book you have read

This is not your typical design book just filled with photos of beautiful rooms and pretty gardens. This books tells a wonderful story of a man who falls in love with a Chateau.
He shares his story of recreating it into a comfortable and elegant home that he loves to share with his friends. So many good design tips and ideas for entertaining.
The photography is gorgeous!

Nice book but disappointment took over

This book is billed as look-see at how the author, Timothy Corrigan (famous designer), purchased and decorated a French Chateau. First the pros:

1) the book is printed on very good quality paper and it would be considered a "coffee table" book.
2) photos are clear, crisp;
3) interesting back stories about many of the rooms that are shown;
4) interesting factoids about what he could, and couldn't do, to this building since it is an historical landmark. For example, Mr. Corrigan could not alter (either structurally or design-wise) the entire first floor so it was interesting to read how he dealt with architectural and design challenges.

Now the cons:
I just came off of reading Howard Slatkin's book "Fifth Avenue Style: A Designer's New York Apartment" so it was probably presumptuous of me to think that this book about the Chateau du Grande-Luce would be somewhat similar. Mr. Slatkin's book, in addition to being visually absorbing was full of very detailed narrative as to how he created his Fifth Avenue home (from blank rooms to his inspirations to his vision to his ultimate design decisions). Mr. Corrigan's book doesn't delve into much detail so when I was done with the book, I felt like I only had an appetizer and didn't get the main course. Here is a run-down Chateau that he transformed into a home -- where are the "before" shots? where are actual FULL shots of an entire room? (there are several in the book but most of the photos are of table vignettes, corners of rooms, views out of the windows, view of a drape, etc). Instead of showing a table outside that is set for dinner (as seen in every other design book), how about seeing photos of all the bedrooms (the Chateau has 14 of which only several are shown). Instead of telling us what amenities a guest room should have (information that is in every other design book), how about providing more info on how the interior design selections were made.
Would have been fascinating to see a "before" floor plan and then an "after" floor plan (since he said that he reconfigured some rooms to fit today's style of living). This book leaves you hungry for photos of full rooms - not just corners, vignettes, or flooring. There's a lot of fluff in this book but little substantive or hardcore design information.

I have an extensive library of interior design books and had I seen this book in a bookstore, I probably would not have purchased it. I am keeping it because in spite of the many missing pieces it has its interesting parts and I have always admired Mr. Corrigan's work.

Captures life as if one was there

This book is structured to capture life as if one was actually visiting the Chateau. These grand homes were always intended as temporary respite from normal life. Even nobility once had a "daily grind".

The Chateau has been rebuilt with such a wonderful balance of respect for history in the places where that counts and appreciation for modern comforts in all of the areas where that matters (after all, who needs to sit on a lumpy couch?)

Beautiful book, wonderful structure, a great fantasy for all of us!
